Who’s Heard of EB? Our Campaign from London 15 April 2026
Rare diseases know no borders, and neither does the mission of DEBRA. This month, we’re spotlighting a unique cross-cultural initiative led by our intern, Ivana. Specifically, she wanted to know: If you walk onto a world-class medical campus in London, how many students actually know what Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is? More importantly, how would results compare to those in Hong Kong?

The Medical Trivia Challenge

To get the most authentic answers, we headed to Guy’s Campus at King’s College London. Rather than asking about EB directly, we embedded a question about the condition within a broader medical trivia quiz. This "stealth" approach allowed us to see if students had heard of EB in a fun and engaging way.

The Results

The findings were encouraging: 6 out of 8 interviewed students identified EB correctly. The most striking takeaway wasn't just that they knew the name, but that it was a core part of their medical curriculum. In the UK, the "Butterfly Skin" awareness movement has successfully integrated itself into medical education, ensuring that most graduates enter the wards with at least a baseline understanding of the fragile skin and complex needs of EB patients.

This leads us to a vital question: Would we see the same recognition rate at HKU or CUHK? While Hong Kong’s medical training is world-renowned for its rigor, rare diseases often struggle for "airtime" against high-prevalence conditions. In Hong Kong, a student might know the genetic basis of EB, but do they understand the daily reality of the dressings, the pain management, and the holistic care required? Our London campaign highlights that when a condition is part of the standard curriculum, the burden on the patient to explain their own disease is vastly reduced.

Awareness is the first step toward better clinical outcomes. By comparing the educational landscapes of London and Hong Kong, DEBRA HK continues to advocate for more visibility within our local medical schools. Whether a "Butterfly Child" is seeking care in London or Hong Kong, they deserve a doctor who doesn't just recognize their condition, but understands how to treat it.
